Tales of the Tails
Dear Friends,

In the sheltering world, the slower winter months are usually a time to catch up. Typically we see fewer animals arriving at our doors as compared to the busy kitten season during summer. Well, not this winter as we have increased our pet adoptions by 13% as compared to last year.

Our programs continue to grow by leaps and bounds with more dogs getting exercised by volunteers with our Loaned Jogger mornings and Swim Therapy adventures. Our Bark University now offers a wide range of public classes from puppy manners to agility with a 50% discount for dog adopters from the Pet Alliance. We also began new shelter hours of Noon to 6pm daily to allow us to provide better care with morning playgroups for all the dogs and uninterrupted cuddle time for the cats.

Paws in the Park was a huge success with 15,000 Central Florida dog lovers enjoying the walk and festivities on a beautiful Valentine's Day weekend at Lake Eola. We raised over $100,000 and provided affordable vaccinations for 50 pets and our first ever, "Check your Chip" microchip scanning for over 500 dogs.

Paws in the Park: A tail wagging good time
This year's Paws in the Park was one for the record books with more than $100,000 raised to support homeless pets in our community. The event was also the largest in history with Lake Eola officials estimating more than 15,000 people in attendance!

The day began with a group walk of over 1,500 registered participants and their dogs. Afterward, guests enjoyed awards, talent shows and vendors offering food and gifts for humans and canines alike. There was something for everyone including Disney Kids & Family Zone, Canine Sports Arena, Splash Dogs and much more!

New fun yards for Sanford shelter dogs
Thanks to a generous $3000 kennel enrichment grant from the Animal Farm Foundation, Inc., our shelter dogs are getting out for daily play and much more. New entrances were created and visual barrier vinyl fencing was installed to allow for both daily playgroups and single dog interactions. We also were able to repair the shade cloth covers and plug holes with telephone poles to prevent escapes.

Pet Therapy Program
Did you know that Florida Statute 233.061 requires Florida schools teach kindness to animals as part of their school curricula? Programs offered by Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando fulfill that need and enrich our community by focusing on humane education early on in a child's life. Primary topics for elementary school include Responsible Pet Ownership and Bite Prevention. Middle and high school programs focus on pet overpopulation, animal cruelty, animal abuse and human violence, and careers directly or indirectly involving animals.

There is always a need for additional members. If you feel that you and your pet have what it takes to be a Pet Therapy Team, the Pet Alliance needs you! Pet Therapy Teams routinely visit hospitals, nursing homes, schools and assist in education programs and community events. We are especially in need of teams to assist with Bite Prevention programs in the schools.
